  2. Pinochet was president for 8 years (1981-1989). The government didn't allow him to be president longer than 1990, but he remained a strong military leader till 1998. He was arrested in 1998 for crimes of genocide and terrorism. A lot of the victims were Spanish nationals. They had a hard time figuring out trial stuff, so he died in 2006 before trial time. He was never punished for the crimes he was accused of. He portrayed physical violence, I'm not sure if he was doing it under the motive of extermination, but he did take peoples lives, which shouldn't happen because of discrimination.

  3. Idi Amin declared himself president in 1971 after he overthrew the elected official Milton Obote. His reign lasted eight years, and in this time he killed an estimated 300,000 citizens. He started by killing Christian tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and Amin saw them as a threat. Amin began discriminating against anyone that did not agree with him, like the Asian population. By doing this he caused the economy to collapse because they Asian population made up much of the work force. He was able to do this by organizing groups like State Research Bureau who went around killing anyone who disagreed or threatened Amin's rule. Amin even sided with terrorists who had hijacked a flight and gave them weapons and man-power to help them.

  5. Joseph Kony stated out just like any other kid. He played football and danced with the other kids. He was normal. Now however, he is the leader of the LRA. They abduct children, beat people to death and even kill their own people. All of this is done under the authority of Kony. He tells them what to do and they do it. Kony believes that everything they do is spiritual and that's what he tells his followers. If he kills someone in his group he says it is because the did not support the cause. He is fighting against the Ugandan government because he doesn't agree with the new laws they want. But it goes much further than that. He is killing innocent people to make a point. On Christmas day in 2008 he lead a massacre in which 800 people were beaten to death and many more were abducted. He is not working under the motive of extermination, but, is taking lives and has gotten to powerful and now is wanted by the International Criminal Court. Both regional armies and100 US soldiers are trying to find him but have had no luck.

  6. Idi Amin rose to power quickly after joining the military, and soon over threw his previous ally who was the current president of Uganda: Obote. He wasted no time to exterminate a Christian group and all Asians living in Uganda, causing the immediate decline of the economy. He went so far as to welcome terrorist groups and at the end of his rule, 300,000 people had been killed. Amin was power hungry and no nations stepped in to stop him until 8 ruthless years had gone by, when Tanzania fought and exiled him to Saudi Arabia. He was able to live the rest of his life there in peace with no punishment for his actions.

  7. Kony claims that his Lord's Resistance Army movement has been fighting to install a government in Uganda based on the Biblical 10 Commandments, but he is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. Kony tells his followers (the LRA) he is a spiritual medium, but he has been characterized a small "terrorist" group who mark those who they have effected by cutting off ears, noses, and lips. "He has created an aura of fear and mysticism around himself and his rebels follow strict rules and rituals." He uses religion to motivate his followers, as well as to explain his actions to those who oppose him.

  8. Kony was born in the early 1960's. After the defeat of his believed cousin, he created his own rebel group that has captured thousands of young people to become sex slaves or fighters. Kony was believed to be and extremest of what he believed. He said that God was speaking to him and telling him to do what he was doing. He said that there were special requirements that you had to do involving oil. He did start off as an ordinary kid, but the power got the best of him.

  9. Joseph Kony was a Catholic altar boy in Northern Uganda. He claims that the Lord's Resistance Army movement he started was to install a new government in Uganda based on the Biblical 10 commandments. But now he is wanted for War Crimes by the International Crime Court. He was due to sign a treaty of peace in 2008 but the LRA wanted assurance that they weren't going to be persecuted and the talk for peace fell. When he finally talked in public, 6 years ago, he was surrounded 3,000 heavily armed forces.

  10. Out of all these leaders, two really caught my eye, Pol Pot and Augusto Pinochet. Pol Pot was very similar to what Hitler did, although you never hear much about him. He had 7-8 million people in concentration camps, but only 1.5 million died. He was so harsh that out of a group of 20,000 people, only 7 survived. He, like Hitler, also died before the rest of the world could catch him. Augusto on the other hand is much more recent, dying in 2006. Like Hitler, he began his quest for power in the military and then expanded outward. He, unlike Pol Pot was arrested and but also never stood trial for his crimes of genocide. He really proves that there can be this "old terror" in our modern day

  11. Idi Amin Dada was born c. 1925 in Koboko, in northwestern Uganda, to a Kakwa father and Lugbara mother, who separated shortly afterwards. In 1946, after receiving only a rudimentary education, Amin joined the King’s African Rifles (KAR), a regiment of the British colonial army, and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1971, General Idi Amin overthrew the elected government of Milton Obote and declared himself president of Uganda, launching a ruthless eight-year regime in which an estimated 300,000 civilians were massacred. His expulsion of all Indian and Pakistani citizens in 1972—along with increasing military expenditures—brought about the country’s economic decline, the impact of which lasted decades. On April 11, 1979, Amin was forced to flee when Kampala was captured. Although he originally sought refuge in Libya, he later moved to Saudi Arabia, where he lived comfortably until his death of multiple organ failure in 2003.

  12. Kony is the leader of a Guerrilla group otherwise known as the Lord's Resistance Army. He would mistreat children and his men would rape young women and girls. Kony has been all over the web because of his dark ways. Power got to his mind when he felt he was the commander. He would burn and amputate innocent people that didn't follow his ways.

  13. Augusto Pinochet was a Chilean dictator who ruled from 1981-1989. He came to power by leading a coup in 1973 and declaring himself the head of his new military regime. In 1980, his new constitution gave him an 8 year presidential term, but he continued to run the military until 1998. In that year, he was arrested in London on genocide charges. His trial kept being postponed for various reasons and he died in 2006 without ever appearing in court for his crimes.

  15. Pol Pot(1925-1998) was the leader of Cambodia for 4 years(1975-1979). His communist movement Khmer Rouge tried to socially engineer a classless peasant society. They targeted intellectuals, city residents, ethnic Vietnamese, civil servants and religious leaders. They created detention centers; one in particular held roughlyv 20,000 people, but only 7 of them survived. about 1.5 million Cambodians(total population of 7-8million) died.

  16. Joseph Kony is the leader of the LRA. He is primarily known for the abuse and abduction of children in Uganda, as well as an event called the Christmas Massacre where 800 people were beaten to death. The reason why Kony is still able to perform these actions and has not been stopped is because he has been able to justify his actions among his followers by explaining that all his actions are instructions from the Holy Spirit. Also, some of the Children that have been abducted have been taught his teachings and have only grown up under his influence, becoming fighters of his cause without question.

  17. Pol Pot was a communist leader who resided within Cambodia. In 1953, he joined the pro to-communist movement KPRP (Khmer People's Revolutionary Party). He reorganized it to follow Marxism-Leninism later in 1960. He moved his operations into the jungles of Vietnam and started the Khmer Rouge guerrilla army, which lead an uprising in 1968, which was one of the later causes of the Vietnam War. By the time the American bombing stopped in 1973, the Khmer Rouge army grew exponentially. Under Pol Pot, the army evacuated 2.5 million residents of Phnom Phen, and forced them to work in the fields as part of a reeducation process. Children were forced from their families to work in the military, and about every aspect of a persons life was controlled by the government. But in 1978, the Vietnamese sent 60000 troops across the border, which sent the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot back into the jungle. Their influence died off by the late 90's. A Khmer Rouge splinter group captured Pol Pot in 1997, who later died in 1998.

  19. Idi Amin was a Ugandan man who was in the military when the British had control of Uganda, he quickly grew in the ranks and became leader of the armed forces when Milton Obote became president. Over time, Obote loss trust in Amin and was aiming to get rid of him. Amin countered this by staging a coup and taking over the government in 1971. He murdered over 300,000 people and was finally exiled when disputes with neighboring Tanzania led to Kampala being captured. He lived in Saudi Arabia for the rest of his life where he was never charged for his brutalities.

  20. Pol pot (1925-1998) was a Catholic who killed 1.5 million people in Cambodia at the time of Pol pot's regime. From 1956- 1963 he was a teacher, along with being a teacher he was plotting a revolution. In 1970 the Vietnam war took place, during the war Pol pot pulled the the regime together and they were 3 times bigger and that only took 3 years. In 1975 the KHMER Rough took over the city of Phnom Penh and forced the 2.5 million residents in Phnom Penh too move out and leave all possessions behind. Then in 1976 Pol pot took over and became prime minister. A year after he took leadership the fighting became the worst it had ever been. Then on January 1979 the Vietnamese went into Phnom Penh and took it back from Pol pot and pushed him into the forest. In 1997 he was captured and put under house arrest, he later died 1998 in his sleep due to a heart failure.

  21. Joseph Kony used to be an altar boy and uses peoples religion to get involved in the Lords resistance Army. Kony's group was influenced by the Holy Spirit Movment that represented Acholi people it was started by Kony's cousin. Kony has abducted many children and see's himself in a spirit sense. Joseph Kony uses fear and threats to create his following and by taking them at a young age they are manipulated easier, he is a bad man and should be stopped.

  22. Joseph Kony was born on Sept. 18, 1964 in Atyak, Uganda. Joseph had considered himself a very good christain and he wanted Uganda to be a christain nation. In 1987 he created a group called the Lords Resistance Army which was also known as the LRA. The LRA has been at a civil war against the government of Uganda ever since. Kony said if the LRA wins he would promise that the Uganda would become a theocracy, and had to follows the laws of the Biblical Ten Commandments. 20,000 children were kidnapped by the LRA for fighters or sex slaves. For the inisation of the children they would commenly be required to kill their parents so they had no place to go home too. The children that were kidnapped were used for pack mules, and to carry the supplies of the LRA. Once they became to weak or stopped walking they would kill them or leave them to die. The boys that were kidnapped would be their targets and decoys. They would send them unarmed. The attractive girls that were kidnapped either became Konys or Senior Commanders wives. The children that gave them trouble would have either their nose, lips, and/or ears cut off and were made to eat their own flesh.

  23. Once Idi Amin came into power by 1966, he began mass genocide towards the Acholi, Lango, and Christian tribes that had been loyal to Obote. Because of their obedience towards their former Milton Obote, they were perceived as a threat through Amin’s eyes. Idi also proceeded to terrorize the general public through the security forces he established to annihilate those who opposed him and his regime.

  26. General Idi Amin overthrew the elected government of Milton Obote, and became president of Uganda. This lead to his horrific and merciless eight-year regime causing 300,000 people massacred. Idi Amin caused the downfall of the economy in Uganda. During the height of the regime Amin would have mass executions upon the Acholi and Lango Christian tribes that had been loyal to Obote. He also terrorized the general public through the various internal security forces, such as the State Research Bureau and public safety unit, who's main purpose was to eliminate those who opposed his regime. A very significant thing that happened in history was when the liberation of Palestine hijacked an Air France flight from Israel to Paris on June 27, 1976, Idi Amin welcomed the terrorist’s and supplied them with troops and weapons, but was humiliated when Israeli commandos subsequently rescued the hostages in a surprise raid on the Entebbe airport. Throughout Idi Amin’s oppressive rule, he was responsible for nearly 300,000 deaths. I believe the people of Uganda believed that he was a great leader and good for Uganda because of his passion and charisma for his “people” and saving Uganda when really he only had motives of terror and selfishness. Eventually all his loyal people and soldiers turned on him and he was sent to exile.

  27. Joseph Kony is a Uganda born Christian. He created the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) to create a government based off of the 10 commandments in Uganda. Kony abducts young children for his Army and to be sex slaves. He tells the people he captures that God sent him messages and told him what to do. He is targeting people's lord and savior in order to get support, this is propaganda. He said that the people that didn't support his cause needed to be killed. He also denied involvement in the chopping off of peoples ears.

  28. Born in the early 1960s in Odek, a village east of Gulu. Kony uses child soldiers to fight and terrorize villages in Africa and Sudan the ones who don't fight are turned into sex slaves. He tells people he was sent here from god and what he is doing is justified. He has denied that his army chops off peoples ears noses and lips. He was to sign a peace treaty with Uganda but the deal fell threw because kony wanted his allies to be put on trail. He is trying to install his own government in Uganda.

  29. Idi Amin came up through the military to finally become the Prime Minister then finally seized control. He told everyone that he wanted to purify Uganda by killing all non-blacks. He used fear to keep himself in power like other fascist dictators. After his rule he didn’t get put to justice and just spent the rest of his time in Saudi Arabia.

  30. Idi Amin started out as just another soldier in the King's African Rifles, but he quickly gained power and climbed up the ranks. Soon in 1966 he was appointed the commander of the armed forces. The former prime minister Obet and Amin were friends and even smuggled in gold and ivory in from the Congo. Their friendship quickly ended when Obet thought Amin wasn't loyal any more, and somehow Amin had him exiled from the country, this gave Amin complete power. From then on he started terrorizing the people, he killed groups of christians who had supported Obet, he also "expelled" all the asians, and offered to help terrorists. Through out his terrible, brutal reign he managed to kill an estimated 300,000 people. He has never had to take responsibility for all of these killings, because he fled to Saudi Arabia where he "lived comfortably" until he died. In my opinion I think it is extremely unfair that he didn't have to pay for all the deaths he caused.

  31. The one on Kony surprised me because I did not know he was still terrorizing people. I thought that since it was no longer a big deal in our news, that it was over. It just shows how the media is so corrupt. We watch things like Dancing with the Stars or Keeping up with the Kardacians and don't pay attention to the real issues going on in the world. Maybe its because ignorance is bliss and because all of us privelaged people in the US dont have any concern for the gruesome things that are going on in the second world countries. This is really sad to me because I feel like we should care. I heard the other day about these girls in Africa who were getting kidnapped by the hundreds, and Kony was doing this. Maybe he still is, but we will probably never know because no one cares.

  32. Pol Pot started a communist movement. Durring this time, about 1.5 million Cambodians died of exhaustion and malnutrition. Almost immediately after he gained power, they evacuated Phnom Penh. Former civil servants, doctors, teachers and other professionals were taken from their jobs forced to toil in the fields as part of a reeducation process. Three years ago I went to Cambodia and visited museums and places where he kept people and it was so extremely scarring and I saw things that I will never forget.

Idi Amin over through the original elected president. And then he elected himself as president of Uganda. In his 8 years of being president 300,000 civilians were killed. But history seems to repeat because eventually Idi Amin power corrupted him. This happened because his troops had enough and turned against him. His allies fell through and stopped supporting him. This eventually led to his falter and an end to a dark time in history.

  37. Pol Pot was the worst leader in Cambodian history. He is responsible for the deaths of 1.5 million Cambodians. He believed in a nation that was mostly agriculture and could sustain itself. Because of this belief he imprisoned and killed many who didn't have professions like those that were based ion agriculture such as lawyers, doctors, and business men. For several years Pol Pot was the leader of Cambodia but eventually he was forced to retreat to the jungle to continue his fight there. Today due to his soldiers many land mines are scattered all across the country. Unfortunately Pol Pot passed away never being pushed for his many crimes against humanity.

He changed the ideals of the party towards Marxist communism. After he took power, no one was allowed to own any type of property and every part of life was controlled by the government. Professionals, like doctors and teachers, were forced to work in the fields as an unskilled laborer. Some of these ideas include: no one can own property, everyone is controlled by the government, and everyone has to put in harsh labor for their country. If you disagreed with these ideas then you would be sent to a detention center where you were tortured and most likely killed.
